Today I’m working on an installment of Antark, and one of the most interesting aspects of writing that story is that I have to do a great deal of mental engineering — designing and redesigning the environmental and logistical realities of living in an extreme climate. I’ve never written any off-world science fiction, but I can imagine it’s very similar to having to create a moon colony or a deep-sea research station; so very many things pop up in the storytelling process that make me back up and rethink how things are done in daily life.
